What is now the modern day location of the United States of America was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes long before the first Europeans made contact. It is estimated that at least 15,000 years ago, and probably much earlier, Paleo-Indians crossed the frozen-over Bering Land Bridge and gradually populated the continent of North America. One of the tribes emerging from this group were the Mississippi people, and they are considered one of the earliest advanced cultures of this country. They engaged in farming, built complex structures and organized their societies into distinct neighborhoods. However, once the Europeans arrived, the overall population of the various Native Americans declined steadily with time mainly due to the many foreign contagious diseases that the Europeans brought with them such as the measles and smallpox to which the local natives had no built up immunity. The Hawaiian Islands down in the Pacific and southwest of the mainland were on the other hand mostly inhabited by natives from Polynesia, who arrived by sea probably only about 2000 years ago.
Though technically the first Europeans to set foot in America were probably the Vikings lead by Leif Erickson, the country didn’t really become populated by Europeans until a well-financed and well-connected Spanish explorer named Christopher Columbus came to this ‘New World’ in 1492. Though Columbus’s expedition was considered the first organized one to lay down the groundwork and foundation for its colonization, the area was eventually named America after the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespucci, who cleared up the misnomer that the so-called New World was not the eastern outskirts of Asia as Columbus had proclaimed, but rather the unique continents of North and South America instead.
In the early stages of the colonization of North America, the Spanish primarily occupied Florida, the US Southwest, and most all of Mexico and Central America. The French mostly held lands along the long Mississippi River while the British covered the eastern and southern parts of the United States by establishing early colonies such as the Virginia and Plymouth Colonies. The House of Burgesses from Virginia was the 1st-elected legislative assembly in North America in 1619.
The early settlers mostly engaged in agriculture but other industries such as trade and lumber production developed with time. However, after many new generations were born here on American soil, they started to question their loyalties to the royal crown. The restless spirit of these pioneers eventually grew rebellious towards the British Monarchy, and a war for independence broke out on April 19 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord near Boston when the British went too far by attempting to seize American guns, gunpowder and ammunitions. The war heated up when the Americans all united and then boldly and formally declared their independence on July 4th, 1776 with a total of thirteen colonies calling themselves the United States of America. The American Revolution War, as it was called, was fought for more than eight long years. It was initially fought in various parts of the eastern United States and then burgeoned into a world war of sorts as it later included locations in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, Carribean Sea, European Costal Waters, Gibraltar, Balearic Islands, and Indian Subcontinent. Through dogged determination mixed with several serendipitous and fortuitous events, the Americans finally won the war and were both granted their hard fought independence and recognized by Great Britain as a sovereign nation with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783.
