Peoria is the largest city on Illinois River and was established in 1691 by Henri de Tonti, a French explorer. In the subsequent years, Fort Crevecoeur would be burned to the ground, which necessitated the construction of Fort Clark in 1813. In 1825, when Peoria County was organized, Fort Clark was renamed Peoria after the Peoria Tribe. The city was incorporated in 1845 as it continued to grow.
