Before European contact, the Native American tribe of Potawatomi people inhabited this area for thousands of years. This area was named after the battle that ensued between the indigenous people living here and the government land surveying team that was led by Col. John Mullet. Historical accounts indicate that when Mullet team were surveying this region several miles from the present location of this city in 1823, the camp was raided by the indigenous people and they stole the provisions of the surveying team. The indigenous people were most likely hungry because the supplies and annuities they got from the government were delayed or their resources were insufficient having ceded their land in the 1820 treaty that restricted them to the reservation areas. During that time, the army was well known for failing to deliver the annuities and supplies timely. During the fight, the surveying team shot and severely wounded one Indian and fearing for more hostilities they packed up, left this region, and did not return until in 1824 after the state government settled issues with the Indians.
