Before European contact, the Delaware Native Americans inhabited this area of Trenton. The first European settlement in this area was in 1679 when a group of people of the Quakers faith in the leadership of Mahlon Stacy and established the Falls of Delaware. Today, Trenton has grown from a village area to a modern city located in the central part of New Jersey in Mercer County; this area is both the county seat and state capital county seat.
